Lost Your FOID Card? You May Be Able to Get It Back
In Illinois, the right to own or possess a firearm starts with a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card. If your FOID card has been revoked, suspended, or denied, you are legally prohibited from possessing firearms.
But a denial or revocation isn’t always final. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to petition the Illinois State Police (ISP) or the courts to reinstate your FOID and restore your Second Amendment rights.
Common Reasons for FOID Revocation or Denial
Under Illinois law, the Illinois State Police may revoke or deny a FOID card for a wide range of reasons, such as:
Felony convictions
Domestic battery or domestic violence arrests
Orders of protection
Mental health admissions
Drug addiction or DUI history
Dishonorable discharge from the military
False statements on your FOID application
Some revocations are automatic, and others are the result of incomplete or misunderstood records. In many cases, reinstatement is possible.
